AMTD Completes $30M Hotel Acquisition, Agrees to Buy London Landmark

The conglomerate's purchase of Dao by Dorsett in Crouch End marks its fifth branded hotel as it expands into cultural venue ownership.

AMTD IDEA Group has completed its acquisition of Dao by Dorsett Hornsey Hotel for approximately US$30 million, financed entirely through internal resources without external borrowing. The London property, situated within the restored Grade II listed Hornsey Town Hall complex in Crouch End, comprises 68 serviced apartments and hotel rooms configured as studios and suites.

Following the acquisition, the hotel will operate as AMTD Dao by Dorsett Hornsey, joining AMTD's branded properties in Hong Kong, New York, Singapore, and Malaysia. The purchase represents the conglomerate's expansion into hospitality, a sector AMTD has targeted as part of its diversified portfolio spanning media, entertainment, education, and premium assets.

Concurrently, AMTD IDEA entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Hornsey Town Hall itself for US$33 million. The 1930s civic structure encompasses an Assembly Hall, Council Chamber, Committee Room, rooftop bar, cinema, town hall square, and flexible event and workspace areas. The venue has functioned as a major art and cultural center, hosting performances by Queen in February 1971 alongside Ray Davies and The Rolling Stones. The building has been featured in television and film productions including The Crown, Criminal Justice, Spooks, The Hour, Whitechapel, and Bohemian Rhapsody.

AMTD plans to leverage its position as a media and arts entity to introduce art festivals and cultural initiatives to the Town Hall. The conglomerate intends to position the venue as a hub for community programming including live music, food and craft markets, and outdoor cinema. Closing of the Town Hall transaction remains subject to customary conditions and is expected in the near term.

The strategy signals AMTD's shift beyond traditional hospitality into experiential cultural real estate, positioning premium properties as extensions of its media and entertainment brands. The two deals total approximately US$63 million in acquisitions, underscoring the conglomerate's capital deployment in European markets.
