Astex Licenses Breast Cancer Program to Genentech in Exclusive Deal
The Cambridge biotech will conduct research on small-molecule candidates under a worldwide agreement with the Roche subsidiary.
Astex Pharmaceuticals has entered an exclusive worldwide research collaboration and license agreement with Genentech, a member of the Roche Group, focused on identifying small molecule drug candidates with selective inhibitory activity as potential breast cancer treatments.
Under the arrangement, Astex will lead research efforts to develop candidates for the program. The agreement grants Genentech exclusive worldwide rights to any resulting therapies, establishing a clear commercial pathway for successful compounds. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The collaboration represents a validation of Astex's capabilities in small-molecule oncology, the company's stated core focus. Astex also pursues therapeutics targeting diseases of the central nervous system. The Cambridge-based firm has positioned itself in the competitive space where larger pharmaceutical companies increasingly license early-stage assets from specialized biotech partners to augment internal pipelines.
Genentech, based in South San Francisco, has maintained an active acquisition and licensing strategy for oncology programs. As part of Roche, the company has the development and commercial infrastructure to advance candidates from research through regulatory approval and to market. Breast cancer remains a significant therapeutic area, with multiple approved treatments across hormone receptor-positive, HER2-positive, and triple-negative segments.
The deal underscores continued industry demand for specialized drug discovery capabilities, particularly in oncology where precision targets and selectivity profiles command premium valuations in partnership arrangements.
