The Tweed Named to Lonely Planet's Best in Travel 2027 List
The Australian region becomes the sole domestic destination on the publisher's annual global ranking, signaling shift toward slower-paced travel experiences.
The Tweed region in Australia has secured a position on Lonely Planet's Best in Travel 2027 list, the publisher's annual selection of 50 inspirational destinations worldwide. The designation marks The Tweed as the only Australian destination included in the Top Destinations Hotlist, and one of three locations selected across the Oceania region. The other Australian entry came via the Northern Territory's Red Centre, which appeared in the Top Experiences Hotlist category.
Lonely Planet's selections this year reflect a broader traveler preference for destinations that prioritize slower pacing, smaller crowds, and authentic experiences beyond mainstream attractions. Jessica Lockhart, Lonely Planet Destination Editor Oceania, noted the region's emergence as both a food and outdoor destination, citing recent infrastructure additions including the Northern Rivers Rail Trail and the Gidjuum Gulganyi Walk. "The space between the Gold Coast and Byron Bay isn't one you want to speed through," Lockhart said. "It's a destination in its own right – and one that's worth lingering in."
The Tweed encompasses majestic landscapes, ancient rainforests, pristine coastlines, and riverside villages. The region has increasingly cultivated a reputation centered on outdoor recreation, creative culture, wellness experiences, and local food production. Lonely Planet specifically highlighted the region's emerald coastlines, charming riverside settings, and combination of natural playground and backdrop for visitor experiences.
NSW Minister for Jobs and Tourism Steve Kamper characterized the recognition as "a fantastic global endorsement that will put The Tweed on the map and shine a spotlight on the local businesses and communities that make it so special." Tweed Shire Mayor Cr Reece Byrnes called the inclusion "a wonderful honour for the Tweed and a proud moment for our community."
The Tweed Tourism Company has launched a Visitor Pledge in conjunction with the recognition—a voluntary commitment inviting travelers to tread lightly, protect natural beauty, and support local businesses. The pledge requests holidaymakers travel with care and respect while engaging with Bundjalung country. Visitors can access the Best in Travel 2027 list through the Lonely Planet app, guidebooks, and Journeys, the publisher's booking platform.
The Tweed's inclusion on a major publisher ranking typically precedes increased international visitation, particularly among travelers seeking alternatives to established coastal destinations.
